M90U-80 high-density modular three-phase UPS

The M90U-80 is a scalable modular online double-conversion UPS that integrates power electronics, internal batteries, a modular static switch, and front-serviceable maintenance bypass into a single 208/120V three-phase cabinet. It scales from 15 to 80 kW at unity power factor using hot-swappable 15 kW or 20 kW power modules — delivering 60–100 kW-class capacity within a compact electrical-room footprint, with N+1 redundancy and internal modular VRLA batteries. Engineered for data centers, healthcare, telecom, and industrial facilities where capacity, density, and serviceability must be balanced in limited space.

Overview

High capacity in a single cabinet

The M90U-80 protects critical data and equipment while supplying clean, network-grade power, and can be configured with a fully redundant power module and battery modules — if one module fails, the remaining modules smoothly take over the load. The independent power modules are hot-swappable without risk to the critical load. By consolidating power, batteries, and bypass into one cabinet, the M90U-80 delivers capacity that traditionally needed multiple cabinets, while keeping modular scalability and redundancy.

High-density architecture

60–100 kW-class capacity, one footprint

Traditional UPS in the 60–100 kW range often require separate cabinets for power, batteries, and bypass. The M90U-80 integrates all three into a single modular cabinet, minimizing the space those systems normally consume while preserving scalability and redundancy. Capacity is added by installing power modules — up to four per enclosure — so infrastructure grows without adding cabinets or increasing the footprint.

M90U-80 deployed in a facility electrical room — a single cabinet delivering 60–100 kW-class capacity in the footprint a multi-cabinet system would otherwise occupy.

Model selection

Capacities and module configuration

The enclosure holds up to four power modules. The 20 kW module line scales to 80 kW (4 × 20); a 15 kW module line is also available, scaling to 60 kW (4 × 15). Unity power factor means the kVA and kW ratings are equal.

Model Capacity Power modules Charge current Redundancy
M90U80-20k 20 kVA / 20 kW 1 × 20 kW 8 A Single module
M90U80-40k 40 kVA / 40 kW 2 × 20 kW 16 A N+1 to 20 kW
M90U80-60k 60 kVA / 60 kW 3 × 20 kW 24 A N+1 to 40 kW
M90U80-80k 80 kVA / 80 kW 4 × 20 kW 32 A Fully populated — non-redundant

N+1 protected capacity is one module below the fully populated rating: up to 60 kW with 20 kW modules (3 × 20 active, one redundant) or 45 kW with 15 kW modules. The 80 kW (4 × 20) and 60 kW (4 × 15) ratings are fully populated and non-redundant. Charge current scales with the populated module count (8 / 16 / 24 / 32 A). A 15 kW module line yields 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 kW configurations.

Internal battery runtimes

Runtime by battery modules and load

Approximate runtime in minutes with internal VRLA battery modules (4 to 16) by system load. A dash indicates that load is beyond the supported range for that battery configuration. For extended runtimes beyond the internal table, an external battery option is available.

Battery modules System load (kVA)
5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 65 70 75 80
4 modules 37 16 9 6
8 modules 85 37 23 16 12 9 8 6 5
12 modules 127 60 37 26 20 16 13 11 9 8 7 6
16 modules 169 85 52 37 28 23 19 16 13 12 10 9 8 7.5 7 6

Runtimes are approximate, based on fully formed batteries, and vary with battery age, temperature, and site conditions. Battery life is reduced above 30°C and capacity derates above 30°C and 5,200 ft. Contact Xtreme Power at (800) 582-4524 or sales@xpcc.com for runtime sizing.

Where it fits

The high-density member of the M90U family

M90U-80 is the mid-scale, high-density platform within the M90U family — deployed in electrical rooms where space is limited and capacity requirements exceed entry-level modular systems. The entry M90U covers 15–60 kW where space is not the primary constraint; the M90U-140 extends to higher capacity; and the Li90 offers an integrated lithium facility UPS.

How to choose

M90U-80 vs the alternatives

Compared with How the M90U-80 differs
Traditional multi-cabinet UPS (60–100 kW) Consolidates power, batteries, and bypass into a single modular cabinet — reducing footprint and simplifying installation while keeping scalability and redundancy.
M90U (standard modular) Builds on the M90U with higher capacity and power density in a more compact cabinet, plus a larger 10-in touchscreen, front-facing maintenance bypass, and backplane-connected battery modules for faster service. Choose M90U-80 when space is limited, capacity approaches or exceeds 60 kW, or faster service access is a priority.
M90U-140 The higher-capacity platform for requirements beyond 80 kW. Choose the M90U-140 when capacity needs exceed the M90U-80 ceiling.

Upgrade path

Replace legacy multi-cabinet systems

M90U-80 is commonly deployed to replace legacy multi-cabinet UPS from APC and Eaton — consolidating multiple UPS into a single platform, fitting electrical rooms with limited space, delivering higher capacity within an existing footprint, and adding modular scalability and redundancy.
